Free Income Tax Preparation
in Central Michigan
The VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program offers free tax preparation in Calhoun and Branch counties for people whose annual income is less than $67,000, who have a disability, or who have limited English speaking skills. The program is managed by certified tax professionals and uses trained volunteer tax preparers to secure the refunds and credits you are due.
How it Works
Who Can Volunteer?
You can! VITA volunteers do not need tax experience. Training is provided free of cost. Volunteers must pass an IRS test on tax laws to participate in the program.
Where is the VITA Program Offered?
The program is offered at multiple sites in Branch and Calhoun County during the traditional tax season.

What to Bring
- If married and filing a joint return, both spouses must be present.
- Photo identification for you and your spouse (if married).
- Social Security cards or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number documents for you, your spouse and/or dependents.
- Birth dates for you, spouse, and/or dependents.
- A copy of last year’s tax return.
- All wage W-2 and 1099 forms.
- All 1099 forms including: Interest, dividends, unemployment, social security, IRAs, gambling winnings, cancelled debt, capital gains/loss, health savings accounts and education forms.
- Marketplace insurance, if applicable.
- Information regarding other income.
- Information for all deductions/credits.
- Total paid to day care provider and their tax ID number.
- For direct deposit of a refund, you must provide proof of an account including the bank’s routing number and your account number.
- For prior year returns, copies of W-2s or income transcripts from IRS.
- Heating bill from December or January showing home heating credit amount.
- Lease agreements or rental information.
