Job Interview Preparation: A Practical Checklist

Prepare for a job interview by reviewing the role, practicing a few honest examples, and planning how you will attend. Bring questions that help you understand the work, schedule, and training. You do not need a memorized speech to have a useful conversation.

Feeling nervous is common. A short preparation plan gives you something concrete to focus on, whether the interview takes place in person, over the phone, or on video.

Understand the job before practicing answers

Read the posting again and visit the employer’s website. Write down the main responsibilities, the listed schedule, and any requirements you want to clarify. Choose two or three parts of the role that connect to something you have actually done.

Your examples can come from paid work, school, volunteering, caregiving, or community activities. Explain the setting accurately so the interviewer can understand your experience.

Prepare examples you can explain in your own words

For each example, make three brief notes: what was happening, what you did, and what happened next. Focus on your actions rather than a long background story.

Here are two fictional examples showing how that structure can work. Use your own experience when you practice.

  • Handling a changing priority: “At a volunteer event, we ran short of supplies at one table. I checked what the other tables could spare, asked the coordinator which need came first, and helped move the supplies. We were able to keep that activity running.”
  • Learning something new: “During a class project, I needed to use a spreadsheet feature I had not used before. I followed a tutorial, tested it on a small example, and asked a classmate to review it. Then I used it to organize our project information.”

Practice saying your example out loud once or twice. If an interviewer asks about something you have not done, say so, then explain relevant experience or how you would approach learning it.

Plan the practical details

  • Confirm the time and format. Check the time zone for a remote interview and save the interviewer’s contact information.
  • For an in-person visit: Confirm the address, entrance, transportation, and parking. Allow time for an unexpected delay.
  • For phone or video: Charge your device, test the connection, and check the microphone. For video, test the camera and meeting link before the scheduled time.
  • Prepare what you need: Keep the job posting, résumé, a pen, and a few notes nearby. Bring documents the employer specifically requested.
  • Choose comfortable, appropriate clothing. Consider the workplace and the type of role. You do not need to buy a new outfit just to prepare.
  • Discuss access needs: If you need an adjustment to participate, contact the hiring team ahead of time to discuss arrangements.

Bring questions of your own

An interview also helps you decide whether the position fits your needs. Choose questions the conversation has not already answered:

  • What does a typical shift or workday involve?
  • How are new employees trained?
  • What schedule and availability does this role require?
  • What would you want a new employee to learn in the first month?
  • What are the next steps, and when should I expect an update?

Make a quick note afterward

Write down what you learned, any promised follow-up, and questions that remain. If you have an appropriate contact, a brief thank-you message can acknowledge the interviewer’s time and confirm your interest.

One interview is practice as well as an opportunity. Notice which examples felt clear and what you would prepare differently next time.
